The widespread skills shortage that has New Zealand in it’s grasp poses a major problem.
Many businesses are in a position where they are ready to grow, but simply don’t have the human capital to do so. Here at Crackerjacks we can see a remedy to this issue.
There are many skilled professionals who are grouped in the ‘ageing workforce’ according to Statistics New Zealand’s 2007 Labour Market Statistics report. This workforce includes all people who are aged between 45 – 64 years. After developing and sustaining a career these people typically have considerable job experience and are at the top of their field.
However, they have worked for a significant portion of their lives and feel the need to review their work/life balance. This situation has seen self employment levels steadily increase to 32% for males and 18% for females aged between 45–49 years in 2007 according to NZ Statistics.
Given that self employment, in other words contracting, gives professionals more flexibility, we can see a great opportunity for business to source professional contractors in this demographic to address their skill shortage issues.
