In view of the current economic market we have learnt it is important not to put all our eggs in one basket.  This idea is relevant to not only investment, but also your career.  We are seeing an increasing trend of people opting to work on contract so they can work concurrent roles at part-time hours.  People are attracted to this option because if one working arrangement falls through they have others to rely on.

There are other reasons why working concurrent roles is appealing, according to a 2007 Hudson report, New Zealand companies are starting to offer staff job sharing opportunities as a draw card to attract professionals.  Job sharing is where two or more people share a full time role.  Achieving a work / life balance is a key reason why people choose to job share, as it allows them to continue develop their career while still focusing on other aspects of their life or work other concurrent roles.

However, only 30% of organizations surveyed offer their permanent employees job sharing opportunities.  Interestingly so, the lowest job sharing opportunities are found the engineering, wholesale / distribution and transportation sectors.

57% of people surveyed said they would be very interested in job sharing opportunities – this shows there is demand in the market for this working option.

Unfortunately this has not become common practice in New Zealand; there are numerous myths surrounding job sharing with the most common of these being that most roles are simply not suitable for sharing.
